Wine Glasses

SHOPPING GUIDE

Using specific wine glasses is crucial for fully experiencing the flavor and aromas of wine… it is TRULY a game changer. I remember tasting the same wine out of a crystal wine glass and an average commercial glass; night and day, as they say. Making an investment in a good bottle of wine, regardless of the price, deserves a glass that will enhance it. Wine has so many unique and pleasurable aromas and flavors that contribute to its expression and the enjoyment that it offers.

Different wine glasses are designed to highlight the unique qualities of different types of wine. For example, a tall, narrow glass is ideal for capturing the full bouquet of a delicate white wine. A wider bowl with a larger opening is better suited to allow red wines to breathe and fully express their complex aromas and flavors. By selecting the right glass for the wine, you can enhance your enjoyment and appreciation of each individual wine, and truly savor its unique characteristics.

There are literally wine glasses produced for every grape variety. That’s how specific and specialized high quality glassware has become. That said, you can have three glasses that you can enjoy with all types of wines. Here’s what I would suggest:

  • Riesling glass: aromatic whites, dessert wines

  • Burgundy glass: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay, sparkling wines/Champagne

  • Bordeaux glass: red Bordeaux varieties, Syrah, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo

the main factors to keep in mind when shopping for wine glasses:

the thinness of the rim and how and where it delivers the wine to your tongue.

The thinner the glass, the less on your lips competing with the wine coming from the glass.

There are several shapes and styles of wine glasses that are specifically designed with certain grape varieties in mind, and our suggestions below will break down those options. There are also wine glasses without a stem for a different type of experience.
