Wine Gadgets, Tools, and Accessories

SHOPPING GUIDE

Wine tools and accessories (aka gadgets) appeal to the emotions of wine enthusiasts. They can create more anticipation and excitement to the wine experience… whether it’s decanting a big wine so it can aerate or bringing out your Coravin for a special wine that you just want to taste. Gadgets can, and often do, elevate an experience when used thoughtfully and intentionally.

Personally, I like to keep it pretty simple and stick to my tried and true, and without too many frills. At their core, these gadgets are meant to maintain the integrity of your wine, and prevent waste. Here’s a quick look at my favorites:

Coravin

We have been long-time advocators for the Coravin. Their original model, Coravin Timeless, allows you to taste any wine without pulling the cork, and without compromising the integrity of the bottle. The Coravin does with with a needle that injects argon gas back into your bottle to prevent oxidation, while pouring wine out and into your glass. It also gives you the opportunity to taste a wine and assess its drinkability without having to open the whole bottle. This can be especially useful for older wines you want to continue to age, wines you just want one glass of, when you’re tasting several bottles of wine… there are countless applications.

Coravin Pivot is a newer system that dispenses faster and keeps a bottle fresh up to 30 days. For this system, you pull the cork and replace it with a special Coravin cork, and then it works very similarly to the Timeless model. This is perfect for those bottles you know you won’t finish in the next couple days, but know you’ll want finish within the month.

Decanter

This is probably one of the easiest and most accessible ways to heighten your experience. Utilizing a decanter will enhance almost any wine by accelerating the aeration of the wine. It is particularly ideal for younger red wines that are high in tannin. Another common use is for separating the sediment from the wine in an older bottle. Decanters come in various styles, some meant for different varietals, and some more decorative and artistic.

Durand

The Durand is a wonderful tool that allows you to extract a cork from an older wine. The cork over time gets compromised and fragile, and can often crumble or break when using a traditional wine opener. The use of this tool can prevent that potential problem and keep you from getting cork in your wine, and helping to maintain the integrity of an old cork.

Vacu Vin Wine Saver Pump

An oldie but goodie, this simple system is a wonderful low-cost, low-effort way to keep your open bottles of wine fresh for a few more days. The system keeps wine fresh up to 10 days after opening by pulling air out of the bottle to prevent oxidation.

Champagne Stopper

Champagne corks do not go back in the bottle so Champagne stoppers are a necessity…. if you don’t finish the bottle. These simple stoppers are designed to provide an air tight seal to keep the bubbles in and the wines fresh.

Wine Suitcase

If you are someone that ever finds themselves traveling with wine like we do, this is the wine suitcase we use that ensures our treasured bottles get to their destination intact! It is an investment, but a worthwhile one if you find yourself in this position regularly. I have the 8 bottle case but there are also 12 bottle cases. This company has several different models that hold more or less bottles depending on your needs
