VINE, GLASS, TABLE

a monthly newsletter

January 23

Dear fellow wine enthusiast,

I hope you are well and enjoying the Fall season. With the holidays right around the corner, in addition to spending time with loved ones, I always appreciate the opportunity to slow down. A restful and reflective period before the activity and rush of the December holidays. In this period of time of giving thanks, I propose doing the same for you, taking the opportunity to be good to yourself and treat yourself to something new and refreshing. A nice way to start is with Champagne, the ultimate wine to pair with food. Champagne is as authentic as a wine product can be, and it always feels especially good when you pop the cork and pour a glass. Wouldn't you agree that during this time of giving thanks and embracing friends and loved ones, enjoying Champagne sounds like a great idea?

Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving!

JANUARY BLOG

"Navigating Restaurant Wines by the Glass!"

One of the great ways to enjoy a wide variety of wines is to explore wines by the glass in restaurants. That said, “wine by the glass” programs can vary greatly from restaurant to restaurant. Factors for this are many: type of cuisine, restaurant concept, menu pricing strategy, sommelier/wine buyer interests, and style of service.  READ MORE

JANUARY WINE DISCOVERY - a monthly feature of a wine we're excited about

2024 Damien Martin Macon Verze

A family domaine, owned by the father-and-son team of Robert and Damien Martin, Domaine Damien Martin owns a small vineyard parcel in the heart of the Mâconnais with Chardonnay vineyards in Verzé, the lieu-dit of Les Maillettes, located in St. Véran and Pouilly Fuissé, and Gamay planted in Mâcon Davayé. Son Damien now manages all aspects of the viticulture and winemaking with a deep love and respect for the traditions of the Mâconnais. The wine has wonderful balance, acidity, concentration of fruit and lovely texture. It is one of the best values in white Burgundy that I have tasted in quite a while. Perfect with sautéed salmon, cod, or halibut with toasted almonds and olive oil.

PURCHASE THIS WINE HERE - We work closely with Central Wine Merchants, our favorite local wine shop in Flemington, NJ, to source the wines for all our classes.

GUESS THE VARIETAL!

Using the hints we provide, can you guess the grape variety? When you have your guess, click the button below!

  • A white grape, most known for its distinct aromatics

  • Aromatics: Very floral wine, often with notes of apricot, peach, nectarine, orange blossom, honeysuckle, jasmine, and sometimes mango or pineapple, with subtle spice (ginger) or almond

  • Flavor profile: ripe stone fruit, pear, melon, citrus peel (not sharp citrus), floral tea, honey, sometimes a slight bitterness

  • Medium to full-bodied, sometimes described as oily or silky

  • Low to medium acidity

  • Typically higher alcohol (13.5–15%)

  • Usually best drunk young

  • Needs warm conditions to ripen properly and can quickly become overripe if harvested too late

  • Sometimes fermented or aged in oak

  • Rhône, California, and Australia produce the most renowned wine from this grape

Which is it? - Viognier, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, or Chenin Blanc?

  • VIOGNIER

IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LIKE THAT - a classic “TEG” favorite

If you like CHARDONNAY, we think you'll like...

Chardonnay and our suggestion have these things in common:

  • medium - full body

  • often barrel fermented, with partial - full malolactic fermentation

  • lots of texture and richness

  • concentration of tropical fruit

If these are the attributes about Chardonnay that always have you reaching for it, then we have another suggestion for you that we think you'll love. Click below to see what it is!

  • CHENIN BLANC
